Manufacturers and marketers are issuing more coupons for healthy eating options.
The shift comes as more people move toward foods with less fat and salt, more nutritional content, and natural ingredients. Traditionally, coupons have often been geared to promoting junk food.
“People don’t realize they can get coupons for healthy foods,” Lisa Eberhart, 55, a registered dietician at North Carolina State University, tells the Charlotte Observer.
The newspaper says coupons for healthy options can be increasingly found in Sunday newspaper pullouts, on the websites of companies that sell organic and natural products and in direct-mail ads.
Coupons found on the web can either be printed out or stored on cellphones, which are then scanned at the checkout counter.
Consumers should also check the fine print of conventional coupons to see if they offer discounts on healthier versions of the same product.
An example would be choosing low-fat or non-fat milk over regular milk, or crackers available in standard or reduced-fat versions.
Eberhart said shoppers should think of coupon clipping as an investment and she recommends families use their savings to buy other healthy foods that don’t have coupon offers.
“Your grocery bill will be the same, but you just have healthier stuff in your cart,” Eberhart said.
