Raise your hand if you are guilty of binge-watching cooking shows and then attempting to recreate those elaborate recipes in the kitchen. The problem is that things can go horribly wrong in the kitchen, which is why most of us have that one cooking ingredient that just seems able to save almost any dish.

That ingredient, for many of us, is cooking wine, according to Fox News. But according to a new report by The Daily Meal, this is the one ingredient you should never cook with. The problem with cooking wine is it is a low grade wine that contains a lot of salt and preservatives, including potassium metabisulfite and potassium sorbate.

These wines are often labeled “not for sale or use as a beverage.” While they are intended solely for cooking, experts warn that they aren’t fit for that either.

That’s because these wines with their salt and preservatives can damage your health. Experts from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health explained that excess sodium in the bloodstream can strain the kidneys. Over time this can lead to high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. It could also lead to heart failure.

It is better for your health and your palate if you swapped out the cooking wine for a good bottle of real wine and there are several reasons why. Real wine has far less salt and The Daily Meal pointed out that real wine can greatly increase the overall quality of a dish while cooking wine could very likely spoil it.
