Age-related vision loss can leave some seniors feeling dizzy and disoriented, increase their risk of falls that can have life-threatening consequences.
But a new study has found routine cataract surgery can lead to not only improved vision, but also less dizziness in patients.
"Dizziness is caused by lots of factors, but the results indicate that cataract surgery removes symptoms of dizziness for some people, so it is an important intervention to consider," said David Elliott, who helped lead the study published in the journal Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics.
Still, some seniors who have the procedure, then switch to multifocal glasses, may note face lower risks of falling.
"Multifocals are very convenient, but the results of the study suggest that older, frail patients — who are at greater risk of falling — shouldn't wear multifocals after cataract surgery if possible," said Elliott.
