'Cancer Survival Guide' Named Top Self-Help Book

The Cancer Survival Guide,” written by award-winning Newsmax reporter Charlotte Libov, has been named the top self-help book for 2016 by a prestigious journalism organization.

“This terrific resource is the book we’d want if diagnosed. It’s comprehensive, clearly written and has authoritative, up-to-date advice on the latest research and treatments for numerous types of cancer,” says the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA), referring to the judge’s decision.

“I am very honored that my book was recognized by ASJA, whose membership include some of the top science and health writers in the country,” says Libov, who is also a speaker on health issues.

“Cancer is already the No. 1 killer disease in almost half of the U.S. and No. 2 in the rest. Millions of people are told each year that they have cancer, so my goal was to write a common sense guide that people could refer to in the event they – or their loved ones – are ever diagnosed with this dread disease.”

“The Cancer Survival Guide” was selected as part of the ASJA's annual competition to select the outstanding nonfiction books and articles written by ASJA's members in the prior year.

Founded in 1948, the American Society of Journalists and Authors is the nation's professional organization of independent nonfiction writers. Their membership consists of nearly 1,200 outstanding freelance writers of magazine articles, trade books, and many other forms of nonfiction writing, each of whom has met ASJA's exacting standards of professional achievement.

Among the book’s detailed sections:

  • What cancer is, its symptoms and causes, and how it affects the body.
  • The major forms of cancer including statistics on gender, age, culture, and prognosis.
  • How to choose the right doctor based on your diagnosis.
  • Creating a personal healthcare record to ensure that no detail is left to chance.
  • Tips for cancer survivors in coping with the disease’s aftermath.

There is also detailed information on finding the nation’s top cancer treatment centers, as well as up-to-date information on breakthrough treatments. There are also sections on alternative treatments, how to find the best treatment centers and the pros and cons of clinical trials.

This is Libov's sixth book. Her first book, "The Women's Heart Book," won several awards, including the Will Solimene Award from the American Medical Writers Association.

"The Women's Heart Book" was among the first books to focus on the threat that heart disease poses to women, and it was made into a nationally broadcast PBS documentary.
