Nearly half of all cancers are preventable. This is according to the World Health Organization, which recently highlighted various ways to safeguard against the deadly illness.
There are certain instances in which cancer is unavoidable. Genetics play a major role in this, but lifestyle factors are equally important when it comes to certain cancers.
We all know that eating healthy and avoiding smoking are effective ways to help prevent cancer, but there are many other things that you can do to further decrease your risks, Best Life noted after recently asking the experts about some crucial cancer prevention tips they had to share. Based on what the doctors said, here are eight factors that could save your life:
- Go plant-based. As one of the fastest-growing health movements, plant-based diets come with numerous benefits and cancer prevention could be one of them. Meat has been linked to several cancers while fiber-packed plant foods have been proven to reduce the risk of cancer. Combining the two could only be beneficial in the fight against cancer.
- Hit the gym. All types of exercise is good for your health but weight training specifically could reduce a person's cancer mortality rate by 31-percent, studies have shown. Up the ante by squeezing in at least 30 minutes of cardio and strength-training a day could go a long way in cancer prevention.
- Ditch the junk food. There are dozens of reasons why you should cut junk food from your diet. Excess sugar, processed foods and saturated fats can lead to diabetes, obesity and certain types of cancer. "Diets that are high in sugars and fats and low in fruits and vegetables can increase inflammation in the body and place you at risk for the development of different cancers, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes," explained Adam Kreitenberg, M.D.
- Cut back on alcohol. A hangover is not the only thing you can get from drinking too much. Cancer is another downside. The more alcohol you drink the greater your chances are of developing mouth and throat cancer, liver cancer and even colorectal cancer.
- Go for a colonoscopy. Despite what you may think, colonoscopies do not just find colon cancer. They can help detect non-cancerous growths (polyps) before they mutate into cancer. According to James Church, M.D., a "colonoscopy actually prevents colon cancer by allowing the diagnosis and removal of the precancerous polyps."
- Wear sunscreen and wear it daily. Sunscreen is important for blocking out UV radiation that causes both nonmelanoma and melanoma skin cancer but you need to be wearing it daily and all year-round. That includes winter days and when the sun is not even shining.
- Maintain your weight. The health issues that come with being overweight are extensive and you can add cancer to that list. The majority of Americans are either overweight or obese, which puts them at a much greater risk of developing various types of cancer. "By getting to and keeping a healthy weight, we all can play a role in cancer prevention," said Brenda Fitzgerald, M.D.
- Go for regular screenings. Prevention is better than cure, which is why it is so important to go for regular check-ups and screenings. If certain cancers are detected early, they can be treated less aggressively and could up your chances of survival.
