Suit Filed in at California 'Superbug' Outbreak

By    |   Thursday, 26 February 2015 04:01 PM EST

A California teenager infected with an antibiotic-resistant “superbug” bacteria at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center is suing the maker of a medical devise linked to the outbreak that sickened seven people and killed two.

The Los Angeles Times reports that attorney Pete Kaufman filed the suit on behalf of 18-year-old Aaron Young, who is still hospitalized. The suit accuses Olympus Corp. of the Americas — which makes the difficult-to-clean duodenoscope involved in the outbreak of the deadly and antibiotic-resistant bacteria known as CRE — of negligence and fraud.

Seven patients were reportedly infected with CRE — two of whom died — after being examined with the scopes. As many as 179 other patients may have been exposed from Oct. 3 to Jan. 28, officials said.

CRE (short for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae) is resistant to antibiotics and can kill up to 50 percent of infected people.
