A Texas teen is fighting for his life after contracting a brain-eating amoeba infection.
Doctors say Michael Riley Jr., a 14-year-old track star who has qualified for the Junior Olympics, contracted the infection while swimming in a lake with members of his school’s track team and coach at Sam Houston State Park on August 13,
Fox News reports.
A week later, Riley fell ill and his family took him to Texas Children’s Hospital, where doctors identified the infection source — a rare brain-eating amoeba called
Naegleria fowler.
Riley was transferred to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston where he is in a medically-induced coma and being treated with an experimental drug provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the family said.
According to the CDC, the infection has a 95 percent fatality rate.
