Scientists have long searched for an artificial heart that works as well as a natural human organ.

Now, after 15 years in development, a new artificial heart made partially by cow tissue is ready for human clinical testing, The New York Times reports.

The heart has been designed by the French company Carmat. By using cow-derived materials for parts of the heart that come into contact with a recipient's blood, scientists say they are able to avoid blood clotting and other problems caused by plastic and other artificial materials.

There is a worldwide shortage of donor hearts. If the Carmat heart proves successful, it would provide hope to the more than 100,000 Americans who need a lifesaving heart transplant but are waiting for a donor.
