An Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis from a simple blood test?
While no such test is currently available — the condition is diagnosed through cognition tests and brain scans — scientists are moving closer to it, BBC News reports.
A team of German researchers is working on a test that detects fragments of genetic code known as microRNAs in human blood. The fragments appear at very different levels in people with Alzheimer’s disease and the new work shows microRNA may play a role in the mind-wasting illness, experts say.
The team analyzed 140 microRNAs in people with and without Alzheimer’s disease and found 12 microRNAs that were present at significantly different levels in illness sufferers.
