The Power of Endorphins

Erika Schwartz, M.D By Tuesday, 13 December 2016 02:39 PM EST Current | Bio | Archive

The more you make endorphins through exercise, the less you need to take antidepressants.

I have some patients who take exercising to extremes, so please don’t overdo it. It’s the same as underdoing it. Extremes don’t work.

If you have been sedentary for a decade or more, you are likely to be overweight and depressed. It’s hard to get off the couch, but if you start slowly, just moving a little, you will see great improvement in how you feel.

You don’t need a gym or a leotard to get started. YouTube has thousands of exercise videos — yoga, aerobics, muscle- and strength-building . . . you name it.

Start slowly with 10 minutes a day. Work your way up to one hour a day.

The results will amaze you.

I have never met a depressed person who exercised regularly.

Why aren’t the psychiatrists telling you that?
