Why Do I Feel Miserable After Weight-Loss Surgery?

Monday, 24 March 2014 09:51 AM EDT

Question: I am a 27-year-old female and recently weight-loss surgery (gastric sleeve procedure). In the past two months, I have lost about 75 pounds. But since the surgery I continually purge and retch, I feel tired all the time, my legs constantly hurt, and my legs, feet, and hands often feel tingly and go numb. Do you know what’s going on?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Your gastric sleeve surgery has been successful or perhaps more successful than you might have anticipated. Although a gastric sleeve can sometimes migrate, causing the symptoms you describe, it could also be that your stomach capacity is simply far smaller than you anticipated it would be, and you are purging the excess food you can no longer consume because of the surgery.

This purging can be harmful, and does place you at major risk of complications. These can include esophageal damage, electrolyte disorders (which can cause tingling and cramps), and many of the symptoms you describe, including the fatigue.

You would be well advised to see your personal physician for re-evaluation, as well as to return to your bariatric surgeon for reassessment as soon as possible.
