Are Extra Pounds Always Unhealthy?

By    |   Thursday, 12 June 2014 09:48 AM EDT

Question: Is it possible to be a little overweight and still healthy? My BMI is 28, but at my latest physical my doctor said all my numbers (cholesterol, pulse, blood sugar, PSA) were all good. I exercise almost every day and eat a pretty healthy diet.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Yes you can be healthy and a little overweight. Weight is only one factor in health. A standard health examination can determine other indicators of potential problems.

But a person with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 28 is not just a little overweight. A BMI of 28 indicates mild obesity. At that level you will face increase health risks — for diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.

I would recommend you try to trim your BMI by four or five points, which will decrease your health risks by maintaining a BMI of under 25.
