Can Hypothyroid Cause Depression?

By    |   Wednesday, 19 March 2014 10:26 AM EDT

Question: Can a hypothyroid condition cause depression or similar symptoms? How about insomnia or unusual sleep patterns?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

In a word: Yes. Hypothyoidism can cause depression, as well as insomnia and serious changes in sleep patterns.

This is why most doctors evaluate all patients with mood disorders or sleep disturbances for thyroid conditions.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you would be wise to consult your doctor for an assessment.
