Can I Get Sunburned on a Cloudy Day?

By    |   Tuesday, 26 May 2015 11:12 AM EDT

Question: Can you get a sunburn on a cloudy day? I usually don’t use sunscreen if I’m outside and it’s not sunny.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Definitely, you can get a severe sun burn on cloudy days. Always apply sunscreen when outside for prolonged periods.

Remember the amount of time it takes for your skin to burn will depend upon your location relative to the equator. More southern locations will burn faster than in more northern locations.

Also remember to re-apply sunblock whenever you go swimming, as even the waterproof screens will wash off within several minutes of swimming.
