Question: I am 48 years old and going through menopause. I am sweating heavily all the time and it's unbearable, making me very angry. How Can I stop this sweating?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
The suffering some women endure at menopause is significant. But the sweats and discomfort can be remedied rapidly with judicious hormone replacement (HRT), with a long-term plan to wean slowly or add in other drugs to replace the hormones to avoid long term issues associated with HRT therapy.
HRT is great initially, but long-term sweats related to menopause may be managed with other medications such as clonidine (a high blood pressure drug), venlafaxine, and other antidepressants.
Avoiding alcohol and nicotine use will help some. You should also steer clear of foods tainted additives or preservatives such as MSG and nitrites Some women report benefits with herbal remedies such as black cohosh or sometimes ginseng to name two, but evidence that they work is anecdotal and may vary.
Plant sources of estrogens are also very popular (called phytoestrogens). But keep in mind that this is still HRT, and hormone therapy — whether from plant or animal sources — should not to be used beyond a short term. See your doctor to determine what is best for you.
