Will My Torn Meniscus Ever Heal?

By    |   Thursday, 21 May 2015 04:16 PM EDT

Question: I recently knee surgery for a meniscus tear, and still have swelling and pain in my knee. Will the tear ever heal?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

The benefits of meniscal repair surgery are usually evident within 3 months, even if tears don’t entirely heal.

Recurring pain and other symptoms that last 12 months suggest some other condition may co-exist.

You might ask your orthopedic surgeon about the merits of a repeat MRI of your knee to see what’s happening.

If metallic clips were used in your knee surgery, you will need to obtain clearance to see if an MRI can be safely done.
