Question: I’ve gained a few pounds (OK, five!) over the holidays and how I want to lose it. What’s the best way to shed the weight safely.
Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
The best way to lose weight is to limit what you eat and get some aerobic exercise daily. Be sure to eat three meals a day, and make your last meal of the day not your largest meal.
Do not skip breakfast, as it will catch up with you. Do not forget to allow for sufficient sleep, as sleep disturbances may contribute to weight gain. If you wish to be less regimented, cut out the carbs and soft drinks, and go for lean protein (chicken or fish products), and eat lots of veggies while avoiding fast food and fried foods.
Do not go on a starvation diet. Watch your BMI (aim for a target of 22, and definitely under 28) and your weight. Both need to improve. If you can count calories, reduce calorie intake by 20 percent or consider a visit to a dietitian who can give you a diet designed to maintain a suitable lean body weight for you.
