What Causes Ice Cream Headaches?

By    |   Thursday, 04 June 2015 09:55 AM EDT

Question: Why do cold drinks, and ice cream, give me a splitting headache? It seems I can’t take even a sip of iced tea or a soda without getting a throbbing pain.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Some of us have more sensitivity to cool fluids than others. In fact this sensitivity can vary from time to time in the same individual.

Be patient, often this subsides by itself and reflects no serious problem. Avoid triggers as best you can. And if you’re still worried, have an ENT evaluation to be sure no underlying condition needs further management.
