Question: My cholesterol is 259, I am 66 years old, and weigh is 155. Do I have a problem?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Difficult to say. I don't know your height, so I cannot judge whether your weight is appropriate. Your total cholesterol is high (over 200), so you do have a problem. The question is whether this problem needs action or not.
You will need further blood testing to evaluate the significance of your elevated cholesterol. Expect a lipid profile to be done by your doctor. This is a simple set of blood tests that measures your HDL "good" cholesterol and LDL "bad" cholesterol levels, as well as your blood fat (triglycerides).
Sometimes this total cholesterol level reflects a very high LDL cholesterol level, meaning no intervention is necessary. More often it is a call to attention to your cholesterol risks, which may need diet or medication intervention to reduce your cardiac, stroke, and vascular risks.
