What's Causing My Heartburn?

Thursday, 06 March 2014 09:36 AM EST

Question: For nearly a month, I have been experiencing constant heartburn, as well as pain in my stomach and back. What could be the problem?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Back pain and stomach pain with heartburn are red flags for ulcer disease, heart disease, and even cancer (to name only a few of the concerning conditions that may be present). These symptoms should be sufficient for you to request an urgent consultation with your doctor.

You should not be waiting any longer and, if you smoke or drink, you would be well advised to stop all tobacco and alcohol use as soon as possible.
