Question: I don’t have celiac disease, but recently went on a gluten-free diet and have lost about 10 pounds since the summer. The only problem I have is that I sometimes feel light-headed. Could it be the diet?
Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
Yes. Gluten-free diets are occasionally helpful to non-celiac patients, but your light-headedness should be looked at. You should always address new symptoms early. Deficiencies in vitamins and minerals may become more apparent when you go on a restrictive diet. See your doctor.
You may just need some minor adjustment or addition to your diet. Or it could be that something new is happening, and early diagnosis should be your priority. Simple heart checks and blood tests for anemia, glucose, B12, iron, folate, vitamin D, electrolytes, calcium, thyroid hormone, and other factors can help determine the best course of action for you.
