Question: Are all generic drugs really the same as brand-name meds? I know they save money, but I don't know if generics are as effective.
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Generic drugs are supposed to contain the same active ingredients as brand-name medications, but unfortunately may differ in some ways. Differing absorption rates, for instance, can affect the action of many agents. Some generic agents may not be inter-changeable without adverse events.
You should always check with your doctor to see if a generic medication is appropriate for you. Some generic neurological and cardiac medications are not safe to use in place of brand-name drugs. Most oral antibiotic generics may be safely substituted. But you should never switch to a generic drug without the knowledge and approval of your doctor.
Part of the problem is the Food and Drug Administration has much tighter purity rules for brand-name agents than for generic products, and sometimes the allowable FDA dose variability may be too excessive. This safety and effectiveness window may vary from agent to agent.
