How Much Exercise Do I Really Need?

By    |   Friday, 23 May 2014 02:52 PM EDT

Question: Do I really need to exercise every day? How much is enough?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Exercising 30-60 minutes three times a week is usually sufficient for most people. Avoid overdoing it, if you are just starting out.

Overuse injuries are among the most common injuries, aside from trauma, that I see — especially for the hand, wrist , elbow, shoulder, lower back, neck, knee, and ankle.

In-depth exercise routines, lasting more than 60 minutes, should be supervised by a professional. More muscle does not necessarily translate into being more healthy. Excess exercise can prematurely wear out weight-bearing joints and it is not necessarily a healthy pursuit.
