Why Does Eating Make Me Sleepy?

By    |   Friday, 30 May 2014 09:46 AM EDT

Question: I often fall asleep on the couch after dinner, even though I get enough sleep at night. I'm not overweight, I exercise almost every day, and don’t overeat because I have diabetes (I'm on metformin). Is this normal?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Sleepiness after eating a meal is normal. Just look to your pets and children and you will realize that you are not alone. Have you ever seen a kitten NOT fall asleep after feeding or an infant become MORE active after being breast fed or bottle fed?

Excessive sleepiness after eating meals may be related to high blood sugars, so be sure to check that your glucose control is optimal. Also be sure to discuss this with your doctor to be certain no other conditions are present that need to be addressed.
