By    |   Wednesday, 28 January 2015 04:15 PM EST

Question: Are Down syndrome and depression related?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

No. They are not related conditions. But depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and other mental health conditions can co-exist with Down syndrome, in childhood or adulthood.

Unfortunately, Down syndrome does not offer protection from depression, bipolar disorder, or other conditions.
