Should I Have CT Scan for Headaches?

By    |   Thursday, 28 May 2015 03:51 PM EDT

Question: I fell while playing basketball a few months back and hit my head, and have been having occasional headaches. There pretty mild and usually an Advil alleviates them. Should I go for a CT scan?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Head injuries are often treated over-aggressively with CT scans.

Persistent or recurrent headaches after an injury may warrant an MRI, but I would avoid a CT scan due to the excessive radiation exposure you would sustain.
