Does Botox Really Treat Migraines?

By    |   Friday, 14 November 2014 10:26 AM EST

Question: Is Botox safe for migraines? A friend said the treatment helped her deal with chronic migraines. What do you think?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

What a great question. For those with recurrent migraines of two or more episodes per week that are not helped by drugs, Botox has been a game changer. It is expensive, but it does work very well in chronic and recurrent migraine patients.

It is not worth the cost for occasional, acute migraines, however. So you should check with your insurance carrier and doctor to see if Botox is right for you. You would be wise to have your insurer approve the use of Botox before you have it done, because it is so very expensive.
