Question: My height is 5-foot-8 (I am a woman). How much should I weigh? My husband is 6-foot-2. Same question for him?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
In order to gauge your ideal body weight, your height, age and gender are necessary.
Assuming you are female at 5-foot-8 and 30 years of age, your recommended BMI ( body mass index) range is 19-25 — 118 to 155 pounds. A weight of 126 pounds would be considered ideal for someone your height, age, and gender would regard as ideal weight.
If your husband is 6-foot-2 and 34 years of age, his recommended BMI range is 19 -25 — 148 to 195 pounds. A weight of 180 pounds would be considered ideal for someone his height, age, and gender would regard as ideal weight.
Note that BMI weight calculation will not always be a good weight predictor, especially in muscular men. It is argued that BMI is not an accurate measurement of body fat content, and that it fails to take into account all ranges of muscle mass, bone density, racial and sex differences, or overall body composition. Despite its limitations, BMI is the preferred method of estimating ideal body weight and is recommended by the National Institutes of Health.
