How Can I Lower My Blood Sugar?

Friday, 22 August 2014 10:41 AM EDT

Question: I have very high blood sugar levels — above 200, even after fasting — but none of the medications I’ve taken seem to do anything. What would you recommend?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

High fasting blood glucoses over 126 indicate the presence of diabetes. Be sure you do not have other conditions such as hypothyroidism, also known to be associated with impaired glucose metabolism.

If you’ve tried oral medications to manage your blood sugar, and they have failed, you may need to consider insulin shots. You should talk to your doctor about your options. Also be sure to have a diet that is suitable for you. A dietitian can help.
