Should I Take Aspirin Daily?

By    |   Friday, 26 December 2014 10:44 AM EST

Question: My doctor has recommended I start taking a daily baby aspirin (my mother died from a stroke when she was 62). My question: I’d rather take ibuprofen because aspirin upsets my stomach and am wondering if it works the same way to prevent cardiovascular disease?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

Although ibuprofen seems to have an element of protection for the heart, based on scientific studies, a low-dose baby aspirin (81 milligrams daily) is far superior.

If you get stomach upset on that mini dose, you need to see your doctor for an evaluation for H. pylori, gastritis, or potential ulcer disease. You should also know that some people are allergic to aspirin.
