How Can I Tell If I Have Apnea?

By    |   Tuesday, 05 August 2014 09:57 AM EDT

Question: My husband says I talk in my sleep, and I sometimes have scary dreams. Are these signs of sleep apnea?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Sleep apnea may be associated with restless sleep, including talking while you are asleep and nightmares, especially if they are disturbing your rest.

CPAP therapy — short for continuous positive airway pressure — may be necessary, and I recommend you see your physician for sleep apnea screening and referral to a sleep lab for more in-depth evaluation.

Untreated sleep apnea is a deadly condition associated with heart failure, heart attack, sudden death, and stroke.
