Nutritional Deficiencies Are Widespread

“What the world needs now, is love sweet love/ That’s the only thing there is too little of.” Those lyrics have been sung by everyone from Dionne Warwick to Martina McBride. But it turns out that love is not the only thing there’s too little of in this world.

A study in The Lancet reveals that more than 5 billion people of all nations, genders, and incomes are deficient in essential nutrients and/or vitamins. Researchers from Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that around two-thirds of the world’s population is deficient in iodine, vitamin E, calcium, and iron. Half don’t get enough vitamin C, riboflavin, folate, and B6.

And don’t think being an American protects you from these risks. Calcium deficiency is widespread in the U.S. Almost half the population has inadequate levels of vitamins A and C. Fully 84% are deficient in vitamin E, 15% don’t get enough zinc. And a whopping 95% of Americans are vitamin D-ficient.

What you need now is love, sweet love — for vegetables, 100% whole grains, fruits, and healthy proteins such as salmon.

We also recommend you get a blood test to assess your levels of minerals and vitamins. Then you can devise a plan to improve your diet, and your doctor can recommend supplements to help you avoid heart disease, cancer, dementia, and loss of mobility.
