Dear Dr. Hibberd: I have had periodic migraine headaches for years. I am a 49 year old woman and Imitrex and worked well for me, although I sometimes do get rebound headaches after taking it. Now my doctor has suggested a new drug called Treximet. What do you think?
Answer: Treximet is Imitrex with 500 mg of naproxen added. It is very useful for many of my migraine patients. Rebound often occurs when initiation of migraine treatment is delayed or when drugs such as Naprosyn are used by themselves. Rebound headache on Treximet is not common but is easily relieved by a 1-3 day dose of low dose prednisone. I would follow your doctor's advice and ask them about 1-3 days of prednisone if rebound headaches occur. Your doctor's opinion is valuable since he/she knows your complete medical history.
