Why Do I Have a Ridge on My Big Toe?

By    |   Friday, 08 May 2015 04:25 PM EDT

Question: The nail on my big toe has a ridge in the middle that almost looks like a new nail pushing the old one out. Half of the nail looks thicker. What could be causing this and what can I do about it? Thanks for your help!

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Nails grow from the base. After trauma, a new nail may displace the old nail, especially if the nail plate has been detached from the old one.

Thicker nails are often seen with fungal infections, as well, so you should see your doctor. He or she can help you determine whether you need medication, surgery, or some combination.

It’s also possible no medical intervention will be required; just a change in footwear or shoes.
