Question: My ears keep ringing constantly. Is there any medications I can take to make it stop?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Tinnitus is the medical term for ringing in the ears. The solution involves treating the cause. Often, it is reversible, but not always. There is no medication that will correct tinnitus. I can be associated with external and middle ear infections and, in those cases, it will clear rapidly as these conditions clear.
Tinnitus may also occur after excessive noise exposure and normally will clear within several hours. Continued excess noise exposure may lead to permanent tinnitus and permanent hearing loss, so be sure to wear ear protection when working with machinery and in noisy environments.
Tinnitus that continues should always be evaluated by a professional. Sometimes it is seen with circulatory disorders, aneurisms, and tumors. If the cause of tinnitus is unknown, arrange to be seen by an ear, nose, and throat specialist for further evaluation after seeing your primary care physician for screening for more common conditions that do not require the expertise of the specialist.
