Is My Thyroid Causing My Hair Loss?

By    |   Friday, 28 February 2014 10:13 AM EST

Question: What’s the best treatment of hair loss due to thyroid problems?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Thyroid problems can cause hair thinning and loss. In hypothyroidism, characteristic hair loss at the outer edge of the eyebrows is also commonly seen. The best treatment is to correct the thyroid deficiency by supplementing your thyroid hormone through a prescription from your physician.

Sometimes thyroid supplementation alone is not enough, as DHT (dihydrotestosterone) levels may be elevated despite proper thyroid replacement. Overactive thyroid conditions may also cause hair loss, and this will usually respond and improve as the thyroid condition is appropriately managed.

It may take 6-12 months to see improvement in hair loss after treatment. Topical Rogaine may be a suitable solution for some men and women. In any event, consider a consultation with your dermatologist to be sure no other causes of hair loss are evident, and to consider options should this hair loss be related to medication use. Sometimes thyroid treatment needs some fine tuning to minimize hair loss.
