Question: I developed a cyst in my thyroid and had needle biopsies done and they were OK (my last TSH test showed .041). But my glucose level was 131 after fasting. Is it possible these two things are related, and what should I do?

Thyroid cysts are usually non-functional, and would not likely have an effect on your glucose. It would be wise for you to discuss long-term management with your doctor if these cysts have been recurrent.
Your TSH is not elevated, so hypothyroidism is not present. Your fasting glucose level is not associated with your thyroid cyst. Your fasting glucose over over 126 meets diagnostic criteria for the presence of Type 2 diabetes, if this was a fasting level taken after 10 to 12 hours of fast. It should be should be treated as well as verified with a test called HBA1C, which measures your average glucose control over the past 3 months.
If you have diabetes, stop smoking, be sure to request an annual retinal examination from an ophthamologist for signs of diabetic retinopathy, modify your exercise and diet, and pay very close attention to aggressive lipid management aiming for an LDL of under 90-100.
