Can Testosterone Shots Cause Infertility?

By    |   Thursday, 13 June 2013 09:48 AM EDT

Question: I was recently diagnosed with low testosterone at age 37. My wife and I have been trying to conceive a child, but have had no luck in the past two years. My doctor has been giving me testosterone injections (200 mg) every two weeks, but can the shots make it harder for us to have a baby?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

No. In fact, testosterone shots to supplement low levels of the hormone may actually improve your fertility, if your sperm count.

If your sperm counts and motility were normal, despite low testosterone levels, then no fertility issue was there to start.

And remember that you have passed your peak fertile years, and possibly your wife has also if she is over 30. But you both need to be evaluated if you are still unable to conceive a child.
