Question: Is there a generic for Synthroid that is less expensive? If so, should I take it?
Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
There are generics for Synthroid (synthetic thyroid hormone), but they are not perfectly identical. So when using thyroid supplements be sure to stick with the same brand and same manufacturer.
Very small dosing variations in replacement therapy make very large differences in thyroid levels, and the variations permitted by generic law are often less rigid than the original guidelines set by the manufacturer.
Sometimes it pays to use the name brand, and thyroid supplementation may be fine-tuned on one brand, as it often common to have to re-adjust dosing when brands or formulations are changed.
