Question: I have pre-diabetes and left a high-pressure job last year and am now working in a less-stressful job. Since starting the new position my blood sugar levels have dropped, but I haven't changed my diet or lifestyle. Is it possible that job stress was boosting my glucose levels?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Yes. Stress can play a major role in our metabolism and I have seen the same circumstance you describe over and over again with my patients.
But it may not only be stress. You probably have more time to take care of yourself, and may be paying more attention to your health risks than when you were working in that high-pressured job.
Congratulations. Medications do not always produce the best solutions with pre-diabetes. Lifestyle changes — including stress management — can make major differences to our health and our health risks.
