Can Stress Make Diabetes Worse?

Tuesday, 17 December 2013 05:22 PM EST

Question: My husband, who has pre-diabetes, was laid off from a high-pressure job last year and is now working for a company that is more laid back. At his last doctor visit, his blood sugar levels were much lower than a year ago, and he believes the stress of his old job was pushing them up. What do you think?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Yes. Stress pays a major role in our metabolism. I have seen the same circumstance over and over again. He probably now has the time to take care of himself more, and is certainly aware of his prior health risks.
Congratulations. Medications do not always produce the best solutions. Lifestyle changes can make major differences to our health and reduce our health risks. I think he is very lucky having you to guide him.
