Why Does My Stomach Rumble?

By    |   Tuesday, 14 April 2015 10:46 AM EDT

Question: My stomach is always rumbling, whether I’m hungry or not. Is this something I should worry about?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Gas in your stomach usually comes from talking and eating at the same time. It usually has to be belched up or passed through your bowel as gas is not absorbed.

A rumbling stomach may, of course, be related to other issues, but less commonly so. If you have had a change in your bowel habits (the concern here is colon cancer) or have pain associated with gas (a possible bowel obstruction), these are red flag indicators that should prompt you to consult your physician.

Excess gas may be resolved by such products such as GasX or others that contain simethicone in tablet or liquid form. But it may be wise to be examined by your doctor before taking such products, just to be sure there is nothing to worry about.
