What Causes Snoring and Is It Curable?

By    |   Tuesday, 27 May 2014 04:35 PM EDT

Question: My husband snores, but does not have sleep apnea (he went to a sleep lab to be tested). But his snoring is so loud I can’t sleep in the same room with him. Is there anything he can do — or I can do — so we don't have to sleep in separate rooms? He can’t tolerate a CPAP mask.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Loud snoring is usually due to airway obstruction. Your husband may not have sleep apnea, but he probably does have airway obstruction. Such issues should be evaluated by an ear, nose, and throat specialist, and perhaps a pulmonary or sleep disorder specialist.

I would get a second opinion, and ask whether nasal CPAP device might help him. Weight management is also important 98 percent of the time, so I would recommend he try to drop a few pounds, even if he is not greatly overweight.

You are right to be concerned, and do not rest until this condition has been remedied.
