Is Snoring Always Sign of Apnea?

By    |   Tuesday, 02 June 2015 09:50 AM EDT

Question: My husband’s snoring makes it impossible for me to sleep in the same room with him. He doesn’t have apnea (he went to a sleep clinic and they said he just snores). Do you have any recommendations for me? I’ve tried ear plugs and ambient white noise machines, but they don’t help.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Advise him to be evaluated further. His snoring reflects an obstruction of his airway. Maybe he doesn’t have sleep apnea, but he clearly has obstructive airway issues that deserve further evaluation.

Consider an evaluation by a pulmonary or ENT specilialist. Some sleep centers are not accredited and drop the ball when it comes to complete evaluations when no cessation of breathing (apnea) is noted.
