Will Snacking Hurt My Blood Sugar?

By    |   Wednesday, 04 September 2013 05:47 PM EDT

Question: What kinds of snack foods do you recommend for a person with hypoglycemia?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Hypoglycemia is usually related to an over-vigorous response of insulin secretion, and is often an early warning of pre-diabetes. I recommend a diet free of simple or refined carbohydrates (free sugars), and emphasize complex carbohydrates with a high fiber, moderate protein intake.

Also eating smaller and more frequent meals is a good idea if dietary changes alone are insufficient. You should always report this condition to your doctor, as other conditions (some serious) can also occur with hypoglycemia. For example, patients with pancreatic tumors may have recurrent hypoglycemia and may require surgery.

Other endocrine disorders can cause recurrent hypoglycemia, some of which require immediate attention — such as Addison's disease (a deficiency of cortisone) that afflicted President John F. Kennedy.

I’d avoid typical snack foods, and prefer you have vegetables such as carrot instead. You should also avoid fast food or snacks loaded with sugars like fructose.
