How Can I Treat My Sleep Apnea?

By    |   Wednesday, 15 January 2014 06:14 PM EST

Question: Is a CPAP machine the only way to treat sleep apnea? I've tried one and can't tolerate it.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) devices are the gold standard for sleep apnea treatment. But various other techniques may improve sleep apnea, including:

1) A custom dental device.
2) Mouthpieces that change the tongue's position during sleep, such as bite blocks or devices that alter the jaw's position.
3) Soft palate surgery (not often recommended).
4) Custom-fitted masks or nasal devices.

Also, do not forget about weight management as a way to treat sleep apnea. And if you still have problems, a visit to a sleep lab may be helpful in choosing an appropriate device for you.
