What Can I Do About Chronic Sinus Problems?

Friday, 28 June 2013 09:54 AM EDT

Question: What causes constant sinus problems? I can hardly breathe through my nose because of the  congestion.

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

Sinus problems can be caused by infection, allergies, physical obstructions, drug reactions, or even tumors. Their drainage must be maintained, or you will suffer the uncomfortable consequences and possibly complication of meningitis and abscesses.

Nasal inflammation will block your passages, and you would be wise to have your condition evaluated by an ear, nose, and throat specialist. It’s probably a good idea to see your primary care physician first for an evaluation for a possible infection or allergic condition.

If you smoke, stop. And don’t use nasal decongestant sprays for more than five days. Prolonged use of over-the-counter decongestants produce a condition called rhinitis medicamentosa — an inflammatory condition that usually requires steroid therapy to be corrected.
