Question: I shampoo my hair several times a day (I work in a profession where I have to shower before I go to work, and after, and on some days I shower a third time after going to the gym). Am I increasing my risk of going bald?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Shampooing your hair several times a day stresses and weakens your hair, removing essential oils needed to help maintain its strength, color, and luster. You are not, however, increasing your risk of going permanently bald any more than your genetics will allow.
Stem cells responsible for new hair growth appear to lapse into dormant cycles, and much research is taking place in this area to try to awaken existing stem cells to produce new hair. Hair growth is also affected by hormones, and exposure to some chemicals is believed to be part of the reason for hair loss.
New hair growth is stimulated with regular application of topical Minoxidil preparations, but this new hair unfortunately falls out when the topical preparation is discontinued.
So, repeated stress to your hair does increase hair loss and may cause some temporary thinning, weakening, and breakage of hair in some people. The precise reasons our hair changes color and thickness does relate to how much we stress it, so go easy with frequent shampooing, as this is not healthy for your hair more often than once a day.
