Why Do Sex, Exercise Make My Head Ache?

By    |   Thursday, 25 September 2014 10:44 AM EDT

Question: I have been experiencing a sudden brain pain while I exercise (and sometimes during sex), but it stops afterward.  What may be the reason behind it, and do I need to worry?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Anyone who suddenly starts having headaches during exercise or sex should go for an evaluation. Although most headaches are caused by simple tension or migraines, it’s important to assess new symptoms that occur suddenly, are severe or recurrent, or occur with other neurologic complaints.

Most are evaluated with an MRI of the brain to be sure these symptoms are not associated with the presence of aneurism, tumor, or vascular malformations in the brain.
