Question: I am a daily reader of your column and value your advice. I suddenly lost my senses of taste and smell about six years ago. There are brief periods when I can taste or smell something, but it only lasts a few minutes. I have read that zinc supplements might help. What do you think?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Zinc supplements are known to boost your immune system, but are now being given in the treatment of colds. However, some studies have found no benefit at all in the treatment for cold. If your sense of taste and smell was lost due to bouts of nasal congestion, zinc supplements are available with the recommended dietary allowance labeled to suit different age groups. You may or may not be able to gain any benefit from it. It is best to talk to your own doctor before taking them.
